We’ve searched far and wide for the best soul sounds on the planet for our Mighty Radio station. You’ll hear Sam Cooke and James Brown and Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder and Al Green and Aretha.
But in addition to the soul superstars, you’ll also hear sides by Solomon Burke and Tyrone Davis and Clarence “Frogman” Henry and the Chantels. Not to mention songs that were major hits in Philly only, like “Storm Warning,” by the Volcanoes.
And we include the early stylists, too. Dinah Washington. Louis Armstrong. Billie Holiday. The Moonglows.
We go deep.
And, yes indeed, you’re right, that is the Orlons on our very own South Street in the photo above, looking all post-modern as only Philly stylists do.
In choosing our playlist, we were inspired by the wondrous soul stations of the past, including those in Memphis, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Cleveland and Nashville, among others. But most especially we channeled our own WDAS and WHAT from back in the day.
Listen to Mighty Radio and you just might hear the kids from Mighty Writers jumping in to occasionally pay tribute to the Philly jocks of yesteryear. Jocko! Georgie! Holiday! The Mighty Burner! Jimmy Bishop! Butterball! The kids from Mighty Writers are learning their Mighty radio history.
We’ll soon be announcing our live programming schedule.
In the meantime, keep it where it’s real. Don’t dare touch that dial!
